6 Fun Social Hobbies to Help You Make Friends and Connect
It’s no secret that hobbies are a great activity when you need some alone time. They can also be fun to do with others when you’re feeling social. There are so many hobbies that you can turn into a social activity and I am so excited to dive into that today.
In this post I will be going over social hobbies that you can incorporate into your life to make it more fun with your hobbies and friends! These kinds of activities are not only a great way to spend your free time but also help you meet new people, build friendships, and rediscover what makes you happy. Regardless of the hobby type you explore, finding a social hobby can make a huge difference in your everyday life. The options of social hobbies are endless, so I will give you my top favorite ideas and how you can execute them.
Why Should You Have Social Hobbies?
Finding a social hobby that fits you and your lifestyle can make a big difference in your life. You may already have hobbies that you love to do alone, such as crocheting, reading, baking, and so on, and that’s great! What’s even better is that when you don’t want to be alone, you can turn these hobbies into social hobbies. Making hobbies social is more fun and meaningful by adding that extra level of connection.
Making time for shared experiences full of creativity and connection does wonders for your mental health. While hobbies may seem like a small thing to add into your routine for your mental health, having something to look forward to and make you feel more connected is great to have on your calendar.
One of the best parts about social hobbies is how easy and naturally they help build friendships. While you are doing the hobby of your choice, there is no pressure to force small talk or feel awkward about silence because everyone is focused on the hobby, not the social interaction. The comfort of knowing that someone is there with you is special, and you are making a lasting memory.
In the next section, we’ll get into some social hobby ideas that are perfect for adults who want to connect, explore, create, and find a sense of community.
Social Hobby Ideas
As I mentioned earlier, the options for social hobbies are endless. There truly is a social hobby out there for everyone. The key is to find something that fits your personality and lifestyle. This should be something that you find fun and look forward to doing often, and you can switch up your social hobbies whenever to keep it interesting.
Here are a few social hobby ideas to get you started.
Join a Book Club
Book clubs are one of the easiest and honestly one of the most popular social hobbies for women. Typically, a book club will assign a book for each month and the members all read them on their own time. At the end of the month, everyone in the book club meets up at a coffee shop or other public place to discuss the book of the month!
Online book clubs are a great place to start finding the right community. You can find these book clubs through most social media platforms. I recommend Kindred House if you are looking for somewhere to start!
The best part about this activity is that it is both a social hobby and a solo hobby. You get to read on your own throughout the month, then you get to share your love for reading with others who also love reading! It’s like a win-win situation. Books clubs truly are a great way to make friends who love books as much as you do.
Try a Group Craft or Art Class
Joining a group craft or art class is a great way to meet others who like to be creative! These classes can be anything from pottery, painting, crocheting, and even a DIY workshop at your local craft store. One of my favorite art classes is a sip and paint, I highly recommend this one if you are of age!
Crafting in a group setting can be super motivational and leave you inspired by those around you. You’ll leave the class with new skills, fun memories, and maybe even a few new friends.
Take a Fitness or Dance Class
For those who find active hobbies more enticing, try out a group fitness class. There are so many class options out there, so you can explore different classes until you find one that suits you.
Dance classes are also a great social hobby because it combines fitness, creativity, and teamwork. You do not have to be the best dancer, just have fun and learn as you go! Remember that everyone starts somewhere, and you do not have to be good at something to do it.
An honorable mention in this category is to join a run club! These are seriously popping up everywhere and they are a great way to find a community in your town or city.
Join a Hobby Club
Honestly, I had no idea that these existed until I moved out of my hometown, but they are everywhere!! You can find a hobby club for literally anything; gardening, photography, hiking, gaming, knitting, scrapbooking, or even journaling. Joining a local hobby group helps you find your people who share the same interests and passions as you.
Just like the book club, you can always start your own hobby club! There are people all around who have the same interests as you, so if you can’t find a hobby club that already exists, don’t be scared to start your own!
Volunteer in Your Community
Volunteering is one of the most rewarding social hobbies that you can try. There are so many volunteer opportunities such as food drives, beach cleanups, animal shelters, and local organizations. Not only will you be giving back to your community, but you’ll also meet kind, compassionate, and like-minded people who want to make a difference.
Getting involved in your community through volunteering is an amazing way to build meaningful connections and make an impact on those around you.
Attend Local Events
Many communities host local events such as farmers markets or creative events where people can connect and learn something new. These are great places to meet new people who live close by and share similar interests.
You can look for these events at your local library, art center, or even small businesses that offer group sessions.
Finding What Works For You
The best social hobby is the one that feels most natural to you. Start small, choose one or two hobbies that sound interesting to you, and see what sparks your interest and go from there. Do not worry about being perfect, everyone who is good at anything always starts somewhere.
Building connections and a community through hobbies doesn’t happen overnight. You have to continuously show up for yourself and others, and over time it will become more comfortable. Be yourself, meet new people, learn new skills, and have fun with the process of being involved with social hobbies.
The Benefits of Social Hobbies
