5 Spring Activities to Try This Season

I don’t know about you, but I’ve been dreaming of spring with all this snow where I live. Luckily, the groundhog just announced that spring will be arriving in 6 weeks, wooooo!! That being said, I thought it would be a great time to talk about some spring hobbies.

As the weather gets warmer (fingers crossed), spending time outdoors feels so rewarding. Especially after this harsh winter cold. There are so many spring activities that I love to make time for. I’m excited to share my list of spring hobbies with you and give you inspiration to pick at least one of these activities up this spring

The Benefits of Spring Hobbies

Before we dive into some of my favorite spring hobbies, let’s chat about the benefits of them. One of the greatest things about spring time is the ability to get outdoors, and with that comes tons of benefits.

The sunshine gives you vitamin D, which helps support muscle function, immune health, and mood-regulating neurotransmitters. It also helps to reduce stress. Being in nature allows your brain to slow down and drown out the noise of the outside world. And finally, spring hobbies give you the chance to be social again. Everyone wants to get out and see each other, and being social through a hobby is a great way to do that.

Hobbies in general have amazing benefits, especially for your mental health. You can read more on the benefits of having a hobby in my other post!

Spring Hobbies to Try

Without further ado… here are my top 5 spring hobbies you should try this season.

Gardening

If you were to ask me what my all time favorite spring hobby is… it would be gardening. This is super beginner friendly, and there is always room for improvement. And the best part? It’s relatively easy to get started.

I was a total beginner when I picked this hobby up three years ago. I was bored after moving home from college and wanted something to focus on. A garden seemed like a great place to put my energy. So I went to the store (Target, lol), and got all of the essentials.

My gardening essentials as a beginner included:

  • A greenhouse kit (I think you can find these at Lowes, Target, or any garden-specific store)
  • Good soil
  • Popsicle sticks (to label your plants)
  • Seeds for the plants you want to grow

And honestly that was about it in the beginning! I am not excerpt here, this is just what I’ve done and it works for me!

When picking your seeds, do some research on the plants you want to grow. Some are easier and some require more maintenance and specific needs, so be careful and learn what you can about them! As a beginner, I love to grow tomatoes, I find them to be super easy. I’ve also had great luck with some peppers. Winter squash has also been successful for me in the past, just keep in mind that they won’t start to actually grow the food until fall rolls around.

You want to get started on your garden usually before spring hits, so your seeds have time to grow in the greenhouse. Once you see some true leaves on your plants and the weather is warm enough (ideally at least 50 degrees), then it’s time to move them to a larger pot outside. Or even in a garden bed if you have the chance to make a spot for it in a yard.

Follow the instructions on how to care for the plants you bought, and you should be in pretty good shape. It is so rewarding to watch the plants grow throughout the spring and summer. And not to mention how amazing some of the produce tastes. I am a big fan of the cherry tomatoes in my garden every summer.

Creative Writing

I don’t know what it is about spring, but it always makes me want to write more. Especially creative writing. This is a hobby that dates back to childhood for me. I’ve always loved writing stories to share with my parents. Bringing this hobby into my adulthood has been so nostalgic in the best way.

This is a super easy hobby to get started on, and you can literally do it anywhere. Pull out your phone and start writing in your notes! Or do it the old fashion way and use a pen and paper, this is my preferred method and I highly recommend it.

Here are some creative writing prompts to get you started:

  • Every spring, one flower in your town grants a wish…
  • You can step into any photograph. Which one do you choose?
  • Describe a season of your life as if it were a room. What does it look like?
  • You meet someone who can bring you back in time 5 years or forward in time 5 years.
  • A butterfly follows you everywhere, and you begin to realize it is guiding you somewhere important.

Use these as inspiration! Storytelling is a wonderful skill to have. Again, I highly recommended doing this one in a journal and not on your phone or laptop. Step away from the chaos and let yourself create a story as a form of escapism. If you love reading, you know how important it is to write and I think this is the perfect way to get into writing as a beginner. And you can do it all outside! Get that sunlight in and create a new story.

Hiking

Nothing compares to being able to be outside again when the weather gets warm. Hiking is one of the best ways to do that. There are so many trails to hike, I guarantee you can probably find some pretty cool ones within an hour or so from your house.

When looking for a trail, I usually start with a simple Google search like “hiking trails near me” and it gives you so many spots. AllTrails is a great tool to check out. It rates how hard the hike is and you can see others’ experience with the same trail.

If you decide to go hiking, make sure you prepare properly. Look into the trail that you are going on to ensure it’s in your skill set. You always want to make sure to bring some water and snacks if you’re going on a long hike. And wear proper footwear!

Most importantly: bring a buddy! Hiking even in safe areas can turn dangerous when you least expect it. So it is super important to always go with someone. And it makes it more fun to share that experience with a friend or family member.

Water Coloring

Artistic hobbies like this and my skill set are still trying to coexist. I don’t know why painting and drawing is so difficult for me, but I am determined to get better at it this spring. So why not try out water color!

I see this all over Pinterest and I’ve been wanting to try it out myself. For Christmas I got a mini water coloring kit and I’ve been so excited to use it. I think this would be a great spring activity because picture this: It’s a nice spring day. The sun is shining, the weather is warmer than it has been, and there’s not a cloud in the sky. You wake up to these perfect conditions, make a coffee, and go sit outside with some paper and water colors and get to painting.

This honestly sounds like a perfect spring morning to me. It’s like a scene right out of The Notebook. Water coloring kits are easy to find online or at a craft store like Michaels. Picking up water coloring as one of your spring hobbies seems so peaceful and relaxing, it is definitely one that is on my list.

Picnic

This list of spring activities would not be complete without a picnic! I think this is one of those activities you automatically think of when you hear spring. At least that’s the case for me.

The great thing about picnics is that you can choose how much energy you want to put into it. Want to do a solo picnic with just a bagged lunch and a book by the lake? Go for it. Want to go all out and invite five of your best friends and dress up and prepare nice food? Awesome! You get to customize your picnic any way you want.

I recommend choosing a location near a body of water, it creates a beautiful ambiance. Bring your favorite foods and an activity. If you decide to do a solo picnic, this is a great time to hobby stack and try out water coloring, creative writing, or any other hobby you enjoy. If you are doing this with friends, that’s a great way to get social and spend some quality time with others.

Taking a break from your daily routines to make time for a picnic is a dream in the spring time. You get some fresh air while reconnecting with nature. I feel like I’ve said this for every activity on this list, but I am totally looking forward to picnic dates with myself and my friends this spring.

Spend Time Outside With Spring Activities

My overarching message here is to get outside this spring. I think these 5 activities are great starting points to be outside more. It can be so easy to take the warmer weather for granted when it’s nice out everyday, but it’s always something to miss when it’s cold. So take advantage of it and don’t let it go to waste!

I will always be a summer girly at heart, but the spring time always feels like the beginning of it all. After being inside for most of winter, I cannot wait to spend more time outside and trying out new hobbies. I hope you have some inspiration for what you want to try this spring! If you loved this post, I also have a newsletter where I share hobby ideas, book recommendations, and lifestyle tips each month and I would love for you to join me there 🩷
