Baking Basics: How to Start Baking and Build Confidence in the Kitchen
Baking is a newfound hobby of mine and I have not stopped talking about it since I started. I’ve always been intrigued by baking, but I never thought I had the patience to follow a recipe and follow each and every step precisely. Then I moved to a new city all by myself and had so much free time and my own kitchen (big emphasis on my own kitchen), so I figured it was the best time to learn some baking basics.
Learning how to bake has been such a fun adventure, and I cannot wait to share with you the baking basics I wish I knew when I first started!
If you’ve ever wanted to learn how to start baking but felt intimidated by all the recipes, tools, and techniques, don’t worry. You don’t have to be a professional pastry chef to bake something amazing. In fact, once you understand a few simple baking basics, it becomes one of the most relaxing and rewarding hobbies you can pick up.
In this post, I’ll walk you through everything you need to know. From baking essentials for beginners to the essential baking ingredients every home baker should keep on hand.
Let’s learn the baking basics.
Why Baking Makes the Perfect Hobby
Don’t get me wrong, the end product of baking is (usually) delicious, but there is so much more to baking than the final result. Through my baking journey, I have learned how to express my creativity, practice patients, and discover joy in the small things. Baking is one of those hobbies that helps you slow down and focus on something tangible after a busy day. For me, baking has become a way to unplug from work and do something that feels productive but peaceful at the same time.
Here’s why I think baking is such a great hobby for beginners:
- It’s soothing. Mixing ingredients, watching dough rise, and smelling your kitchen fill with sweetness can be incredibly calming.
- It’s creative. You can experiment with flavors, textures, and decorations to make each recipe your own.
- It’s fulfilling. The process of creating something is so rewarding, and you get to share your baked goods with others (and enjoy them yourself).
- It’s beginner-friendly. You can start with simple recipes and learn as you go.
If you’ve been looking for a hobby that’s fun, comforting, and fits into your lifestyle, baking might be exactly what you need.
How to Start Baking: A Beginner’s Mindset
Before we talk about tools and ingredients, let’s talk mindset. The first step in learning how to start baking is realizing that it’s okay to make mistakes. Every baker, even the most experienced ones, burns a few cookies or forgets an ingredient once in a while. The magic of baking is in the process, not perfection.
When I first started baking, I treated it like a fun experiment. If something didn’t turn out right, I figured out what went wrong and tried again. That mindset is everything. Baking is a skill you develop over time, and the best part is that even your “failures” are usually still edible.
The first time I attempted to bake bread, it was a mess. I didn’t know what temperature the water needed to be, how much time to let the dough rise, what to bake it in… I honestly knew nothing. But overtime I’ve filled these knowledge gaps and can make a pretty good loaf of bread.
I feel like I say this in every post, but everyone starts somewhere! Embrace the mistakes and turn them into lessons to make the next thing better.
So, grab your apron, tie up your hair, and get ready to make a little mess. That’s part of the fun.
Baking Essentials for Beginners
When you’re first starting out, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the endless baking tools and gadgets out there. You’ll see dozens of options online, but the truth is, you only need a few baking basics essentials for beginners to get started.
Here’s what I recommend having in your kitchen:
1. Mixing Bowls
You’ll need at least two or three mixing bowls in different sizes. Start with a medium and large one, they’ll cover most recipes.
2. Measuring Cups and Spoons
Accuracy is everything in baking, so invest in a good set of dry and liquid measuring cups, plus measuring spoons.
3. A Whisk and a Spatula
A whisk is perfect for mixing dry ingredients or whipping eggs. A silicone spatula helps you scrape every bit of batter from your bowl (and sneak a taste… we’ve all done it).
4. Baking Pans
Start with a few basic pans: a cookie sheet, a muffin tin, and an 8×8-inch square pan. These will work for most beginner recipes.
5. A Hand Mixer or Stand Mixer
If you plan to bake often, a hand mixer makes life so much easier. A stand mixer is great if you decide to take your baking to the next level, but it’s not essential right away.
6. Cooling Rack
This helps your baked goods cool evenly and prevents sogginess. It’s one of those small items that makes a big difference.
7. Parchment Paper
This one’s a game changer. Parchment paper makes cleanup easy and keeps cookies from sticking.
Once you have these baking essentials, you’re ready to start experimenting with recipes. You don’t need fancy gadgets or expensive tools, just the basics and a good attitude!
Essential Baking Ingredients to Keep on Hand
If you’re stocking your kitchen for the first time, these are the essential baking ingredients you’ll want to have. They’ll cover most beginner recipes, from cookies to cakes.
Dry Ingredients
- All-purpose flour: the foundation of most baked goods.
- Granulated sugar: adds sweetness and texture.
- Brown sugar: adds moisture and flavor depth.
- Baking powder and baking soda: your leavening agents (they make things rise).
- Salt: enhances flavor and balances sweetness.
Wet Ingredients
- Butter: gives baked goods richness and texture.
- Eggs: add structure and help everything bind together.
- Milk: adds moisture; you can substitute with dairy-free options if needed.
- Vanilla extract: enhances flavor and makes everything smell amazing.
Optional (but fun) Add-Ins
- Chocolate chips
- Cocoa powder
- Cinnamon or nutmeg
- Nuts or dried fruit
- Frosting or powdered sugar for decoration
Having these staples on hand means you can whip up something sweet anytime the craving strikes.
Baking Basics: Understanding the Process
Now that you’ve got your tools and ingredients, let’s talk about the process. Baking might seem complicated, but when you break it down, most recipes follow the same basic steps.
Step 1: Read the Recipe First
This one’s simple but so important. Before you start, read through the entire recipe so you know what to expect. You don’t want to be halfway through and realize you missed a step or ingredient.
Step 2: Measure Accurately
You’ve probably heard this one a million times before, but baking is like science. A little too much or too little of one ingredient can change everything. Always measure carefully and level off dry ingredients.
Step 3: Follow the Order
There’s usually a reason for the order of steps in a recipe. Cream your butter and sugar first, then add eggs, then dry ingredients. Following the order helps your batter mix evenly.
Step 4: Don’t Overmix
Overmixing can make your baked goods tough instead of soft and fluffy. Mix just until everything is combined.
Step 5: Keep an Eye on the Oven
Every oven is a little different. Start checking your baked goods a few minutes before the suggested time to make sure they don’t overbake.
Step 6: Let Things Cool
It’s tempting to dig in right away, but cooling allows your baked goods to set and reach the perfect texture.
Once you’ve done these steps a few times, they’ll start to feel second nature.
Beginner-Friendly Baking Ideas
I’ve gathered some of my favorite beginner-friendly recipes that you can start your baking journey with:
- Chocolate chip cookies (everyone’s favorite classic)
- Banana bread
- Brownies
- Muffins
- Sugar cookies
Start with something simple and forgiving. You’ll gain confidence quickly and learn how ingredients behave as you bake.
Tips to Build Confidence as a Beginner Baker
Baking should be fun, not stressful. Here are a few small tips that have helped me over the years:
- Start small. Don’t jump straight into complicated pastries. Begin with one-bowl recipes.
- Have patience. If something doesn’t turn out right, try again. You’ll get better every time.
- Use what you have. You don’t need fancy equipment to make great baked goods.
- Make it social. Invite friends over for a baking day or share your creations at work.
- Take notes. Keep a baking journal to jot down what works and what doesn’t.
Remember, every baker starts as a beginner. You showing up in the kitchen and trying your best is all you need.
Making Baking a Part of Your Routine
Once you get comfortable with baking basics, it’s easy to make it part of your self-care or weekend routine. Bake on Sundays while listening to music, or make something sweet on Friday nights after a long week.
The best part about baking is how flexible it can be. It’s one of those hobbies that fits perfectly into a busy schedule. You can do it alone to unwind, or with friends for a fun, social activity.
