20 Outdoor Hobbies to Try As the Weather Finally Warms Up

I will always be a summer girl at heart, so the first signs of warmer weather has me getting ready to defrost. I love when days start to get longer I want to live my life outside as much as possible. Outdoor hobbies become less of a goal and more of a must in the spring. I’m suddenly a person again after months of being locked inside (I hate the cold with every bone in my body).

Outdoor hobbies have become one of my favorite ways to feel present during the warmer months. They naturally give shape to my days. I literally want to be outside constantly. Whether I am spending time with friends or choosing an outdoor hobby to enjoy alone, being outside helps me feel grounded and like myself again.

If you are looking for outdoor hobbies for women, outdoor hobbies to do alone, or even just one outdoor hobby to try this spring or summer, you’re in the right place. These are hobbies you can build into real life, not just a perfect version of it.

Why Outdoor Hobbies Matter More in the Spring and Summer

Outdoor hobbies are perfect for the spring and summer months because of the warmer weather. Being outside is an automatic mood booster, and it’s even better when the temperature is above 60 degrees. I swear the sunshine and fresh air make it easier to enjoy simple routines that may feel rushed in the colder months.

Outdoor hobbies often support mental wellness without feeling like another thing on the to do list. Spending time outside encourages movement, creativity, and connection. Even choosing one outdoor hobby can make the upcoming seasons exciting.

I’ve noticed that when I prioritize outdoor hobbies, my days are soooo much better. My creativity flows, my mood feels better, and overall I feel happier. Outdoor hobbies become a part of how I take care of myself and I take full advantage over them. Here are some ideas so you can optimize your time outside as well.

Outdoor Hobbies to Enjoy With Friends

Hiking Local Trails Together

Hiking is one of the outdoor hobbies I look forward to most once the weather gets nice. Ever since high school my best friend and I would always go to this open trail near our house as soon as it was warm enough. We spend a few hours walking and talking and it’s usually the highlight of my week.

I love hiking with friends in the spring and summer because it creates space for real conversations. AKA… no phones! Unless you’re taking pictures of the amazing view you get on the trails. Hiking also reminds me how good it feels to move my body, and it doesn’t even feel like a workout (most of the time).

Hiking also works for all different energy & skill levels. Some days it is a slow scenic walk. Other days it is a more challenging trail. Both count.

Picnic Dates in the Park

Ugh this is the hopeless romantic in my daydreaming of my perfect spring date. Picnicking is one of the easiest outdoor hobbies to romanticize everyday life in general. All you need is a cute blanket, fresh fruit, sandwiches, (maybe some wine), and a good book or friends to turn an afternoon into something memorable.

A picnic date at a park would work beautifully for casual friend dates, birthdays, or weekends when you want to feel present without overplanning. I love how picnics feel like a private moment in the middle of an open park.

Outdoor Yoga or Pilates Classes

Outdoor yoga and pilates feel especially nourishing during warmer months. Practicing movement outside adds a calming layer that indoor studios cannot replicate.

This is one of my favorite outdoor hobbies for women who enjoy gentle movement and mindfulness. Many parks and studios offer outdoor classes during spring and summer, making it a social and grounding experience.

Beach Days and Lake Days

Spending time near water is one of those outdoor hobbies that instantly signals summer. Beach days and lake days are unmatched in my mind. You can swim, read, lay in the sun, play games with friends… the possibilities are endless. This is what I look forward to the most in the summer.

Going to the beach or to the lake works so well with friends because everyone can enjoy the day in their own way. It can take up a whole day, but there is so much to do that it’s always worth planning the trip.

Walking

Walking with friends is one of the simplest outdoor hobbies that you could do. Evening walks through the neighborhood or along a trail create space to unwind after long days. I like to go on walks with my parents after dinner and it’s one of my favorite parts of my days.

Walking doesn’t require planning or equipment. It simply invites movement and conversation into your routine. It’s also an amazing way to clear your mind whenever you’re feeling overwhelmed.

Outdoor Photography Walks

Okay this is literally walking… but adding in some photography moments. Photography walks is more of a creative hobby that helps you see familiar places differently. Exploring your town with a camera or phone encourages curiosity and presence.

Photography walks are perfect for spring and summer when flowers are in bloom. Before your walk, you can write down specific items you want to capture so you know what to look for while you’re walking.

Outdoor Hobbies to Do Alone

Reading Outside in the Sunshine

Reading outside is one of my favorite outdoor hobbies of all time. As soon as the weather warms up, I take my book to the patio, the park, or even just a sunny spot near the window.

Right now, I am reading Beartown by Fredrik Backman, and I’ve been loving sitting by the window and feeling the sun shine down on me as I read. I can’t wait to move my reading outside this spring!

Solo Nature Walks

Solo nature walks are one of the most grounding outdoor hobbies to do alone. Walking without headphones, noticing sounds, and moving at your own pace is so peaceful.

Nature walks are perfect for when you need space to think or simply want to feel present.

Journaling Outside

Journaling outdoors brings a different energy to reflection. The sunlight, breeze, and sounds of nature make writing feel more intuitive and honest. And I feel like I could write forever when I’m outside.

Moving your journaling time outside pairs beautifully with morning or evening routines. A notebook, pen, and a quiet spot is all you need.

Gardening

Gardening is one of the most nurturing outdoor hobbies for women. It is so rewarding to plant a seed and watch it bloom as the weather gets nicer.

Spring and summer are perfect seasons to start gardening, whether that means flowers, herbs, or vegetables. Even a few potted plants can evolve a space.

I started a garden a few years back, and every spring I start to plant seeds again to grow what I already have. Nothing is better than looking outside at a garden you grew, and having fresh produce from that garden!

Sitting With Sunrises and Sunsets

Watching the sunrise or sunset is a simple outdoor hobby that invites stillness. Sitting quietly and noticing the colors of the sky is one of my favorite pastimes. I think the photo album in my phone consists of 75% sunrise/sunset pictures.

Watching the sunset always reminds me to pause and appreciate small moments. I also love to bring my journal with me to write as the sun goes down.

Creative Outdoor Hobbies for Spring and Summer

Painting and Sketching Outside

Creating art outdoors brings inspiration in unexpected ways. Painting landscapes, sketching flowers, or doodling in a notebook feels playful and low pressure when done outside.

Getting creative with painting and sketching works perfectly for beginners or experienced artists!

Writing in Nature

Writing outdoors helps ideas flow more naturally. I love bringing my laptop or notebook outside and working in short sessions. Being outside makes me feel more inspired and creative, and some of my best ideas form when I am surrounded by nature.

Flower Pressing

Flower pressing is a slow and thoughtful outdoor hobby that feels especially fitting for spring and summer. Collecting flowers during walks and preserving them later creates meaningful keepsakes.

Pressed flowers can be used in journals, frames, or handmade cards. Honestly, these are some of my favorite touches to DIY paper craft projects.

Active Outdoor Hobbies for Warmer Days

Cycling Around Your Neighborhood

Cycling is a refreshing outdoor hobby that combines movement and exploration. Riding through your neighborhood or along trails makes exercise feel enjoyable instead of forced. Throw on a good playlist and you could end up cycling for hours without even realizing it.

Paddleboarding and Kayaking

Paddleboarding and kayaking are peaceful outdoor hobbies that allow you to experience water if you’re not the biggest fan of swimming. Being on the water encourages balance and presence.

Tennis and Pickleball

Tennis and pickleball have become popular outdoor hobbies for good reason. They are social, active, and accessible. Since they have gotten so popular, you can probably find a club near you to get started.

Slower Outdoor Hobbies

Bird Watching

Bird watching is a quiet outdoor hobby that invites patience and curiosity. Sitting and observing nature helps slow your thoughts and sharpen awareness.

This is a wonderful outdoor hobby to do alone.

Outdoor Meditation

Meditating outdoors adds an extra layer of grounding. Listening to natural sounds and feeling the earth beneath you creates a deeper sense of calm and connection.Meditating pairs beautifully during mornings or evenings.

Laying Out and Resting

Resting outside counts as an outdoor hobby. Laying on a blanket, listening to music, or simply being still helps your body and mind reset. This is your reminder that hobbies don’t need to be productive to be meaningful!!

How to Choose an Outdoor Hobby That Fits Your Life

Choosing an outdoor hobby depends on your energy, schedule, and personality. Some outdoor hobbies to do alone feel restorative, while others feel energizing and social.

I like rotating my outdoor hobbies based on the season and my mood. Hiking and picnics feel perfect for weekends with friends. Reading outside and journaling fit into slower weekdays.

Making Outdoor Hobbies a Regular Part of Your Routine

Outdoor hobbies become easier when they feel accessible. Keeping a blanket in your car, a book in your bag, or walking shoes by the door helps you choose fresh air more often. Making the decision to get outside everyday will certainly improve your mood, even if it’s just five minutes. Small moments outside really do add up over time.

Outdoor Hobbies Are IN This Spring

Outdoor hobbies bring a sense of presence and ease that make the spring and summer feel extra special. Whether you enjoy outdoor hobbies to do alone or prefer sharing experiences with friends, spending time outside helps life feel fun again after a cold winter.

I hope this list inspires you to explore new outdoor hobbies or return to ones you already love. Sometimes the most meaningful moments happen when you step outside and let the season guide you.

Each month I send a newsletter with new hobby ideas, book recommendations, and lifestyle tips I’m loving. I would love if you joined and became apart of the community 🤍
