Solo Female Travel Tips for Beginners: What I Wish I Knew Before My First Trip
If you have ever caught yourself daydreaming about packing a bag and heading off on your own adventure, this post is for you. I will be sharing my best solo female travel tips in this post. Solo travel can feel exciting, intimidating, freeing, and overwhelming all at once. I remember looking at flights and wondering what it would be like to wake up in a new place with no one to answer to and no fixed schedule. A little scary, kinda thrilling, but mostly inspiring.
Since those initial thoughts of wanting to explore the world, I have taken several trips that have shaped me in ways I could never have imagined. I have had incredible opportunities to explore London, Paris, Niagara Falls in Canada, Newport Rhode Island, and various spots of Florida and NYC. But the trip that changed me the most was my one month stay on Oahu, Hawaii. This experience taught me so much about solo traveling and why I learned to love it so so much. It gave me confidence, clarity, and a deeper connection with myself.
Today, I want to share my best solo female travel tips along with real stories from those trips. Whether you are searching for solo travel tips in general, looking for guidance on how to solo travel for the first time, or simply trying to build confidence as you start your journey, I hope this guide helps lead you in the right direction to your first solo adventure.
Start With a Destination That Feels Approachable
When it comes to solo travel for beginners, choosing your first destination plays a big part in how comfortable you will feel. You do not need to pick the most adventurous spot on the map. You can start somewhere that speaks to you and feels manageable.
London was one of my first major trips and honestly, it was perfect. The transportation is easy to figure out, locals are helpful, and there is no language barrier. I could explore at my own pace and never felt out of place. Paris was similar in that sense. Sure, I had to brush up on a few French phrases (luckily I studied French in high school), but it was still incredibly welcoming and filled with simple moments that made me fall in love with travel even more.
The biggest lesson here is that your first solo travel experience does not need to be complicated. Pick a place that feels exciting but not stressful. You want to build confidence and learn how you like to travel and explore new places on your first trip.
My Most Transformative Solo Trip: One Month On Oahu
Before we get into more solo female travel tips, I have to tell you about the trip that changed everything for me. Spending a month alone on Oahu was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.
I still remember stepping off the plane and instantly feeling like I could breathe again. This trip was so important to me because it was one I’ve been wanting to do since my freshman year of college. When I graduated, this solo travel trip was my graduation gift to myself. I was there for an entire month with nothing but my suitcase, my camera, and this deep desire to slow down and reconnect with myself.
Oahu taught me how to sit with my thoughts, enjoy my own company, and trust myself more than I ever had before. I hiked trails that pushed me out of my comfort zone. I tried beaches I had never heard of, sat alone at cafes, journaled almost every day, and even made a few friends along the way. Every morning I woke up excited to choose how I wanted to spend my day.
The biggest thing I learned during that month was that solo travel gives you space to grow without pressure. You get to choose what you want to do based on what feels good for you. There is no one else to worry about, just whatever you want to do and wherever the wind takes you.
Plan What Matters and Leave Room For Surprises
When people ask me how to solo travel without feeling completely lost, I always recommend planning the basics and leaving room for spontaneity. You do not need to schedule every second of your trip. You also do not want to show up without any idea of what you are doing.
What I usually do is map out things like:
- Where I am staying
- How I will get around
- A few must see attractions or restaurants
- Safety details that make me feel secure
Once I have these all figured out, I give myself space to wander, discover, and follow any random small adventures that call my name. Some of my favorite travel memories came from unplanned moments. Most of my days spent on Oahu were unplanned. I would wake up and google “things to do near me” and go through the laundry list of ideas for the day. My favorite day was when I visited Kualoa Ranch and got to see filming locations of movies such as Jurassic Park.
Structure is helpful, but the unplanned moments always lead to the best adventures.
Stay Somewhere That Makes You Feel Safe and Comfortable
One of the most important solo female travel tips is to choose the right place to stay. The location and atmosphere of your accommodation can change your entire experience.
Some things I always look for include:
- A safe neighborhood
- Walkability or easy access to transportation
- Recent reviews that mention cleanliness and staff friendliness
- A space that feels homey
- A place with good lighting and secure entry
In Oahu, I stayed somewhere that gave me the perfect mix of comfort and freedom. It was cozy enough to feel like a home base but close enough to beaches and cafes so that I never felt isolated. In London, I stayed near the city center which made getting around so easy, and In Paris I chose a charming spot near a metro station. Do your research on where you are traveling to ensure the location you visit fits what you want.
Never feel guilty about prioritizing your peace and safety. Your accommodation is more than a place to sleep. It becomes your sanctuary between adventures, so make sure you find a space that works for you and your needs.
Trust Your Instincts and Prioritize Safety
Your intuition is one of your greatest tools when learning how to solo travel. If something feels off, trust that feeling. You do not owe anyone explanations or politeness when it comes to keeping yourself safe.
Here are a few simple but powerful safety focused solo travel tips:
- Share your itinerary with someone you trust
- Keep your phone charged
- Avoid walking alone late at night in unfamiliar areas
- Stay aware of your surroundings
- Keep important documents stored safely
- Listen to your instincts
- Blend in when possible and avoid drawing unnecessary attention
Safety does not have to feel restrictive with the right approach. It’s just a part of taking care of yourself while you explore the world on your own.
Learn How to Enjoy Eating Alone
If you are new to solo travel, eating alone might feel intimidating at first. I used to worry that people would stare or think I looked lonely. But once I experienced my first peaceful solo meal, I realized it wasn’t bad at all.
Bring a book, a journal, or simply people watch. You might find that these moments are some of the most grounding parts of your trip. I always keep a book on me during my travels, so this was a must whenever I went out to eat alone, and half the time I forgot that I was even alone at the restaurants.
Some of my favorite memories from Oahu came from solo meals near the water. I would order something delicious, sit outside, listen to the waves, and watch the sunset. No distractions, no pressure, just me + my book + a good meal.
Let Yourself Grow Through The Uncomfortable Moments
Solo travel brings out the best in you, but it can also push you in ways you might not expect. There will be moments when you feel unsure or a little lonely or even overwhelmed. This is 100% normal and it does not mean you are doing anything wrong.
Solo travel teaches you resilience and self trust in the most gentle way. You learn that you can figure things out. You learn that you can support yourself. You learn that you are more capable than you once believed.
Capture The Moments That Matter to You
One thing I always encourage for solo travel for beginners is to take photos, journal, or find some way to document your experience. Not for social media or anyone else, but for you.
When I look back at the little videos I took in Oahu, the snapshots of London, or the journal entries I wrote in Paris, I remember exactly how I felt in those moments and it brings me right back. I remember the sense of pride, the excitement, the peace, and the wonder. These memories become part of you and having them captured makes the experience even more special.
You Do Not Have to be Fearless to Travel Alone
If you take anything from this post, let it be this. You do not need to have everything figured out before you start your solo travel journey. You do not need to be fearless or perfectly prepared. You just need to be willing to take the first step.
Solo travel is one of the most rewarding gifts you can give yourself. It shows you who you are when the noise of everyday life fades away. It helps you grow, explore, rest, and discover new parts of the world and new parts of yourself.
If you have been thinking about it, consider this your sign. Choose the place, buy the ticket, and start your solo travel journey. You deserve the adventure and the transformation that comes with it.
I am so excited for all of the adventures you have ahead of you!
